Teeth Grinding Treatment

Bruxism Treatment in Mermaid Beach

Bruxism is when someone subconsciously clenches and grinds their teeth together, often due to stress. It can happen during a hard day at the office, on the commute home or more commonly, while you’re sleeping at night.

Unfortunately, night-time bruxism is a hard habit to break on your own. Fortunately, Dr Anna Williams (Dentist) can help you to reduce the strain that grinding and overuse play on your teeth.

Problems Caused by Teeth Grinding

Woman waking up with jaw painBruxism isn’t just an annoying habit; it can actually lead to long-term damage to your smile. Some of the most common side effects of constant overuse of the teeth and engaging of the jaw muscles can cause problems like:

  • Flat, worn enamel
  • Broken crowns, veneers or other dental work
  • TMJ disorder and pain
  • Chronic headaches or earaches
  • Changes in tooth alignment

Treatments for Bruxism

We use two types of teeth grinding management treatments to offer the best results and re-train your jaw muscles. Used in combination, they’re more effective at relieving pain and preventing additional damage.

First, we fit you with a custom anti-grinding mouthpiece that rests comfortably over your teeth. This acrylic guard creates a small amount of space between the upper and lower jaw, preventing them from fully engaging.

Next, we use injectables (the same ones commonly used for treating fine lines and wrinkles) to ease the muscles around the jaw joint. As natural muscle relaxers, such products provide extended results that can last for up to three months or more. They can be reapplied as necessary; all you need is a short appointment to touch up.
